How often do electricity rates change?

It depends entirely on your utility — and the schedule is knowable. Among the utilities we track: Duke Energy Ohio's default rate changes MONTHLY; most Ohio utilities reset quarterly (Jan/Apr/Jul/Oct 1); Maryland, New Jersey, Delaware, and Illinois utilities step between summer and winter rates (the next step is October 1); Pennsylvania utilities change on June 1 and December 1 (some quarterly); and AES Ohio and Pepco DC lock a rate for a full year each June. Your supplier-offer comparisons should always account for when the default rate you're comparing against will change.

When is the next big electric rate reset?

October 1, 2026 — the biggest reset day of the season. 14 of the utilities we track change rates that day: Ohio's quarterly SSO resets (AEP Ohio, Ohio Edison, The Illuminating Company, Toledo Edison), the seasonal summer-to-winter steps in Maryland (verified increases: BGE 14.609→15.223¢, Pepco 13.27→14.77¢, Delmarva 12.35→13.16¢), New Jersey's BGS winter rates, Delaware's winter rate, and the Illinois non-summer rates (ComEd's typically drops).

Do electric rates go down in winter?

In some places, up in others — this is where 'winter rates' surprises people. Maryland's SOS rates INCREASE October 1 (BGE steps from 14.609 to 15.223¢/kWh — verified from BGE's posted rates); New Jersey's winter BGS rates are also higher than the summer first-tier rates. But ComEd's non-summer rate typically DROPS (its summer premium reflects PJM's summer peak), and Ohio's October quarterly reset can go either way. Check your utility's row in our calendar before assuming.

Should I wait for the rate reset before switching electricity suppliers?

Sometimes — and this is exactly why the calendar matters. Two rules: (1) Never sign a contract in the final days before your utility's reset without knowing the new number — an offer that 'beats' today's rate can lose to next month's. (2) Where the reset direction is KNOWN, use it: Maryland's October 1 increases are already published, so a fixed offer that only narrowly beats the summer SOS becomes clearly better on October 1; ComEd's rate typically drops for non-summer, so a September offer that barely beats the summer PTC may cost you more from October.

When does BGE's rate change next?

October 1, 2026 — and the new figure is already published: BGE's Standard Offer Service steps from 14.609¢/kWh (summer) to 15.223¢/kWh (winter, through May 31, 2027), per BGE's posted POLR rates. That's a 4.2% seasonal increase Maryland households can plan for now.

When is the next Ohio SSO reset?

October 1, 2026 for AEP Ohio, Ohio Edison, The Illuminating Company, and Toledo Edison — their SSOs now reset quarterly, and the current period runs July 1 – September 30. Duke Energy Ohio changes monthly (next: August 1). AES Ohio is the exception: its 10.86¢ SSO is locked through May 31, 2027. New figures post on PUCO's Apples to Apples at energychoice.ohio.gov.
