Common questions
- How much does 1 kWh of electricity cost?
- A kilowatt-hour is the unit your electricity is billed in. The supply price ranges widely by utility — across the states we track, currently from about 8.953¢ to 19.31¢ per kWh. Pick your utility above for its exact current rate.
- How much is a kilowatt-hour in watts?
- 1 kWh = 1,000 watts running for 1 hour. So a 100-watt bulb left on for 10 hours uses 1 kWh; a 1,500-watt space heater uses 1 kWh in 40 minutes.
- Is the kWh rate the whole story?
- No. The per-kWh supply rate is what this shows, but your bill also has delivery (distribution) charges and fixed monthly fees. The supply rate is the part you can sometimes shop in choice states.
